codeine/pseudoephedrine/triprolidine (Actifed with codeine)

Introduction

DEA controlled substance: class 5.

Indications

• symptomatic relief of cough & upper respiratory symptoms

Contraindications

• concurrent use of MAO inhibitors

Caution:

• glaucoma
• hypertension
• respiratory insufficiency

Dosage

• adults & children > 12 years: 10 mL every 4-6 hours PRN
• children 6-12 years: 5 mL every 4-6 hours PRN
• children 2-6 years: 2.5 mL every 4-6 hours PRN

Syrup: pseudoephedrine HCl 30 mg, triprolidine HCl 1.25 mg, codeine phosphate 10 mg/5 mL (120 mL, 240 mL)

Adverse effects

• drowsiness, hyperexcitability, dry mouth, constipation, GI upset, blurred vision
