Etiology

• gynecologic cancer
  • cervical cancer
  • endometrial cancer
• gynecologic surgery
• radiation therapy to treat gynecologic cancer
• menopause
• hematometra

Clinical manifestations

• menstrual abnormalities
  • amenorrhea
  • dysmenorrhea
  • abnormal vaginal bleeding
• infertility because sperm cannot pass through the cervix to fertilize the egg
• inability to insert a tool to obtain a specimen for Pap smear, cervical cytology or endometrial biopsy
• may be asymptomatic, especially after menopause

Management

• treatment indicated only for symptoms, hematometra, or pyometra
• dilation of the cervix
  • a cervical stent) in the cervix may be placed for 4 to 6 weeks
