Genetics
- defects in ABCC8 are the cause of transient neonatal diabetes mellitus type 3
- defects in KCNJ11 are the cause of transient neonatal diabetes mellitus type 3
Clinical manifestations
- insulin-requiring hyperglycemia within the 1st month of life
- in about half of the neonates, diabetes is transient & resolves at a median age of 3 months, whereas the rest have a permanent form of diabetes

Complications
- possible relapse during adolescence
- possible increased risk of diabetes type 2 later in life
- gestational diabetes
