Epidemiology

• rare

Genetics

• defects in ABCC8 are the cause of transient neonatal diabetes mellitus type 3
• defects in KCNJ11 are the cause of transient neonatal diabetes mellitus type 3

Clinical manifestations

• insulin-requiring hyperglycemia within the 1st month of life
• in about half of the neonates, diabetes is transient & resolves at a median age of 3 months, whereas the rest have a permanent form of diabetes

Laboratory

• KCNJ11 gene mutation

Complications

• possible relapse during adolescence
• possible increased risk of diabetes type 2 later in life
• gestational diabetes
