Diagnostic criteria
- ocular signs & symptoms
- dry eyes every day for more than 3 months
- recurrent sensation of sand or gravel in the eyes or use of tear substitutes more than 3 times/day
- positive Schirmer's I test or rose Bengal score of >= 4 (Bijsterveld's scoring)
- oral symptoms
- daily feeling of dry mouth for more than 3 months
- recurrent or persistently swollen salivary glands, or use of liquids to aid in swallowing dry foods
- histopathology
- focus score 1 in minor salivary gland biopsy
- salivary gland involvement by
- salivary scintigraphy, or
- parotid sialography, or
- salivary flow (=< 1.5 mL in 15 min)
- autoantibodies to:
- anti-SSA/Ro Ab, or
- anti-SSB/La Ab, or
- antinuclear antibodies (ANA)*, or
- rheumatoid factor (RF)*

Exclusion criteria:
- previous head & neck radiation
- hepatitis C
- AIDS
- pre-existing lymphoma
- sarcoidosis
- graft-vs-host disease
- use of anticholinergic agent(s)
