Adverse effects
HIV antiretroviral therapy is associated with:
- hyperlipidemia
- diabetes mellitus
- hypertension
- accelerated atherosclerosis
- increased risk of myocardial infarction[1][2]
- 26% per year during the 1st 4-6 years of treatment[1]
- only antiretroviral protease inhibitors associated with increased risk[3]
The adverse effects are likely greatly outweighed by the lifesaving benefits of the antiretroviral actions.
