Introduction

The region of the forebrain ventral to the anterior half of the lentiform nucleus.

It extends in the frontal plane from the lateral preoptic nucleus of the hypothalamus laterally over the optic tract to the amygdala.

Rostrally, it tapers off over the dorsal border of the olfactory tubercle.

Caudally, it ends where the internal capsule forms the cerebral peduncle.

The substantia innominata contain septal nuclei, including the magnocellular cholinergic neurons of the nucleus basalis of Meynert, medial septal nucleus & diagonal band of Broca.
