Etiology
- primary hypoalphalipoproteinemia
- secondary causes of diminished HDL:
- type 2 diabetes mellitus
- impaired glucose tolerance
- insulin-resistance
- obesity
- androgen excess in females
- renal failure
- pharmaceutical agents
* selective reduction in HDL; other causes of diminished HDL also elevate serum triglycerides
Management
- nicotinic acid (niacin) is the drug of choice
