Etiology
- metastatic carcinoma
- lymphoproliferative malignancies
- disseminated granulomatous disease
- inherited disorders (Gaucher disease)
Pathology
- bone marrow failure secondary to infiltration by non-hematopoietic cells or pathogens
- destruction of hematopoietic precursor cells, often associated with marrow fibrosis
Clinical manifestations
Laboratory
- nucleated red cells, teardrop forms
- giant platelets
- immature myeloid cells in peripheral smear
