Epidemiology
- together with Salmonella enteritidis, the most common cause of non-typhi Salmonella illness in the US
- associated with consumption of dehydrated foods, poultry products or pet turtles, ducklings & iguanas
Pathology
- severe non-bloody diarrhea
- septicemia in patients with AIDS
- fever
- may precede onset of Reiter's syndrome
Laboratory
- fecal leukocytes generally positive
- blood cultures in immunosuppressed patients
- Salmonella typhimurium serology
- Salmonella culture from stool
Management
- supportive
- antibiotics
- prolong the carrier state
- do NOT affect the course of the disease
- use only if blood cultures as positive
