Indications
- evaluation of diarrhea
Clinical significance
fecal leukocytes are generally present with:
- invasive intestinal bacterial infection
- Salmonella
- Shigella
- Yersinia
- invasive E. coli
- Entamoeba histolytica
- inflammatory processes
- antibiotic-associated colitis (occasional)
fecal leukocytes are generally absent with:
- diarrhea secondary to viruses
- diarrhea secondary to toxigenic bacteria
- parasites
