Introduction
1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydroxycyclohexane; a member of the vitamin B complex necessary for growth of yeast & mice. Absence from the diet causes alopecia & dermatitis in mice. It occurs in a number of stereo-isomeric forms: cis-, epi-, allo-, neo-, myo-, muco-, chiro-, & scyllo-inositols. The most abundant naturally occurring isomer is myo-inositol (usually meant by 'inositol').
Pharmacokinetics
- crosses the blood brain barrier
- metabolized to glucose
Mechanism of action
- inositol competes with phosphoinositides for interaction of Abeta, thus reduces formation o A-beta oligomers (ADOLS)
