Introduction
Tradename: Suprax. 3rd generation cephalosporin. Suprax discontinued 2003; back on the market summer in 2004[4][5]
Indications
- treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections
- otitis media
- upper respiratory tract infections
- bronchitis[8]
- single dose treatment of gonorrhea
Contraindications
- hypersensitivity to cefixime or cephalosporins
- use with caution in patients allergic to penicillin
Dosage
Tabs: 200, 400 mg, Suspension: 100 mg/5 mL.

- Haemophilus
- Escherichia coli
- Klebsiella species
- Serratia species (+/-)
- Salmonella species
- Shigella species
- Proteus mirabilis
- Proteus vulgaris
- Providencia species
- Citrobacter species
- Aeromonas species
- Yersinia enterocolitica
- Pasteurella multocida
- Haemophilus ducreyi
Adverse effects
- not common (1-10%)
- uncommon (< 1%)
- other
- prolonged use may result in superinfection
Drug interactions
- probenecid increases serum levels
- may interfere with oral contraceptives
- drug interaction(s) anticonvulsants with anti-bacterial agents
- drug interaction(s) of antibiotics with warfarin
