Introduction
Tradenames: Vexol.
Indications
- treatment of inflammation after ocular surgery
- treatment of anterior uveitis
Contraindications
- epithelial Herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic keratitis)
- vaccinia, varicella & most other viral diseases of the cornea & conjunctiva
- mycobacterial infection of the eye
- fungal diseases of the eye
- acute, purulent, untreated infections which might be masked or enhanced by glucocorticoids
Caution:
- prolonged use has been associated with development of corneal or scleral perforation & posterior subcapsular cataracts
- effectiveness & safety not established in children
Dosage
ophthalmic: 1 drop every 1-6 hours (1% suspension)
Suspension: 1% (5 mL, 10 mL)
Pharmacokinetics
- absorption through aqueous humor
- any absorbed drug is metabolized in the liver
- elimination in urine & feces
elimination via liver
Monitor
- intraocular pressure
- periodic examination of the lens with prolonged use
Adverse effects
- not common (1-10%)
- temporary mild blurred vision
- uncommon (< 1%)
- stinging, burning of eyes, corneal thinning, increased intraocular pressure, glaucoma, damage to the optic nerve, defects in visual acuity, cataracts, secondary ocular infection
