cosyntropin (Cortrosyn)

Indications

• cosyntropin-stimulation test
  • aid in diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency
• infantile spasms

Dosage

0.25 mg IV or IM over 2 minutes

Drug interactions

• test does not interact with prednisone, dexamethasone or beclomethasone
• cortisone & hydrocortisone may cause high baseline cortisol & paradoxical decrease in cortisol following administration of cosyntropin
• estrogens cause elevated baseline cortisol, but normal incremental response to cosyntropin should occur
• spironolactone may cause high cortisol levels to be reported when fluorometric analysis is used
