acute myeloid leukemia t[18;21][q22;q22];(AML1/ETO)

Epidemiology

~5-12% of AML cases

Pathology

• generally showing maturation in neutrophil lineage
• myeloid sarcomas may be present
• CD56 expression & other karyotypic abnormalities may be associated with poorer prognosis

Genetics

• chromosomal translocation involving AML1 & ETO genes

Management

• usually associated with good response to chemotherapy, complete remission & long term disease free survival when treated with high dose cytarabine in consolidation phase
