- major connective tissue mitoattractant secreted by vascular endothelial cells
- promotes proliferation & differentiation of chondrocytes
- mediates heparin- & divalent cation-dependent cell adhesion in many cell types including fibroblasts, myofibroblasts, endothelial cells & epithelial cells
- enhances fibroblast growth factor-induced DNA synthesis
