Function
- component of the cornified envelope of keratinocytes
- may link the cornified envelope to desmosomes & intermediate filaments
- substrate of transglutaminase
- some Glu & Lys are cross-linked to other envoplakin molecules, to other proteins such as keratin, desmoplakin, periplakin & involucrin, & to lipids like omega-hydroxyceramide
- may form a homodimer or a heterodimer with periplakin (PPL)
Structure
- belongs to the plakin or cytolinker family
- contains 7 plectin repeats
- contains 1 spectrin repeat
Compartment
- cell junction, desmosome, cornified envelope
- cytoplasm, cytoskeleton
- colocalized with DSP at desmosomes & along intermediate filaments
Expression
- exclusively expressed in stratified squamous epithelia
- expressed during differentiation of epidermal keratinocytes
