Function
- catalyzes sulfation of membrane glycolipids
- seems to prefer beta-glycosides at the non-reducing termini of sugar chains attached to a lipid moiety
- catalyzes synthesis of galactosylceramide sulfate (sulfatide), a major lipid component of the myelin sheath & of monogalactosylalkylacylglycerol sulfate (seminolipid), present in spermatocytes (putative)
- also acts on lactosylceramide, galactosyl 1-alkyl-2-sn-glycerol & galactosyl diacylglycerol (in vitro)
- lipid metabolism; sphingolipid metabolism
3'-phosphoadenylyl sulfate + galactosylceramide = adenosine 3',5'-bisphosphate + galactosylceramidesulfate
3'-phosphoadenylyl sulfate + monogalactosylalkylacylglycerol = adenosine 3',5'-bisphosphate + monogalactosylalkylacylglycerol sulfate
Structure
- belongs to the galactose-3-O-sulfotransferase family
Compartment
- Golgi membrane; single-pass type 2 membrane protein (putative)
Expression
- expressed in kidney proximal tubule, gastric mucosa
Pathology
- expressed in adenocarcinomas
- highly expressed in renal cell carcinoma cell lines
