- receptor specific to the heptapeptide core common to ACTH & alpha-MSH, beta-MSH, & gamma-MSH
- signal is mediated by G proteins that stimulate adenylate cyclase
- interacts with ATRNL1 (putative)
- involved in hypothalamic signal transduction regulating appetite & response to leptin
