Function
- inhibitory myelin protein; member of reticulon family
- inhibits axonal extension/regeneration (both in restriction of axonal regeneration after injury & in structural plasticity in CNS)
- isoform 2 reduces the anti-apoptotic activity of Bcl-xl & Bcl-2
- binds to RTN4R
- interacts with Bcl-xl & Bcl-2
- Nogo-A (full length) has strongest inhibitory activity in culture
Compartment
Alternative splicing
isoforms: at least 4
- Nogo-A, Nogo-B & Nogo-C
Expression
- isoform 1 expressed in brain & testis, weakly in heart & skeletal muscle
- isoform 2 widely expressed except for liver
- isoform 3 expressed in brain, skeletal muscle, adipocytes
- isoform 4 is testis-specific
- Nogo-A (full length) is highly expressed in oligodendrocytes but not Schwann cells
