Function
- plays a role in vagally-activated nocturnal gastric acid secretion (independent of gastrin)
- there is a distinct PACAP receptor in the anterior pituitary, but PACAP may share receptor with VIP in lung
- binding to its receptor activates G proteins & stimulates adenylate cyclase in pituitary cells
- interacts with ADCYAP1R1 (via N-terminal extracellular domain)
Structure
- belongs to the glucagon family
- shares 68% sequence homology with vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) in 28 N-terminal amino acids
