• plays a role in vagally-activated nocturnal gastric acid secretion (independent of gastrin)
• there is a distinct PACAP receptor in the anterior pituitary, but PACAP may share receptor with VIP in lung
• binding to its receptor activates G proteins & stimulates adenylate cyclase in pituitary cells
• interacts with ADCYAP1R1 (via N-terminal extracellular domain)

• belongs to the glucagon family
• shares 68% sequence homology with vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) in 28 N-terminal amino acids
