Function
- role in regulation of structural processes in both differentiating & mature neurons (putative)
- activated by binding of S100B which releases autoinhibitory N-lobe interactions, enabling ATP binding & autophosphorylation of Ser-282
- Thr-442 then undergoes Ca+2-dependent phosphorylation by STK24/MST3
- interactions between phosphorylated Thr-442 & the N-lobe promote additional structural changes that complete activation
- autoinhibition is also released by binding of MOB1/MOBKL1A & MOB2/HCCA2 to the N-terminal of STK38L
- phosphorylated upon DNA damage, probably by ATM or ATR
- homodimeric S100B binds two molecules of STK38L
- interacts with MOB1 & MOB2
Structure
- belongs to the protein kinase superfamily, AGC Ser/Thr protein kinase family
- contains 1 AGC-kinase C-terminal domain
- contains 1 protein kinase domain
Compartment
- cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, membrane
- associated with the actin cytoskeleton
- colocalizes with STK24/MST3 in the membrane
Expression
- ubiquitously expressed
- highest expression in thymus
