MAX-interacting protein 1; protein MXI1 (MXI1)

Jump to search
Function
- transcriptional repressor
- MXI1 binds with MAX to form a sequence-specific DNA-binding protein complex which recognizes the core sequence 5'-CAC[GA]TG-3'
- MXI1 thus antagonizes MYC
- transcriptional activity by competing for MAX
- interacts with SMC3 (putative)
- efficient DNA binding requires dimerization with another bHLH protein
- binds DNA as a heterodimer with MAX
- interacts with RNF17 (putative)
Structure
contains 1 basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) domain
Compartment
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2
Expression
- expressed brain, heart & lung > liver, kidney & skeletal muscle
Pathology
- defects in MXI1 are found in some patients with prostate cancer (CaP)
