Function
- catalyzes covalent attachment of ubiquitin to other proteins
- degradation of short-lived & abnormal proteins
- ubiquitinates huntingtin
- foam cell formation by suppression of apoptosis of lipid-bearing macrophages via ubiquitination & degradation of p53.
Compartment

named isoforms=2
Expression
- expressed in spleen, thymus, prostate, testis, ovary, small intestine, colon, peripheral blood leukocytes, T-lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes & bone marrow mononuclear cells
- highly expressed in brain, cortex, striatum > cerebellum, brainstem
- induced by aggregated low-density lipoprotein
