Function
- intermediate filament protein expressed in CNS stem cells in neural tube
- later replaced by neurofilament upon terminal differentiation
- may play a role in the trafficking & distribution of intermediate filament proteins & potentially other cellular factors to daughter cells during progenitor cell division (putative)
- interacts with FHOD3 (putative)

- upon terminal neural differentiation, nestin is down-regulated & replaced by neurofilaments
