Function

• intermediate filament protein expressed in CNS stem cells in neural tube
• later replaced by neurofilament upon terminal differentiation
• may play a role in the trafficking & distribution of intermediate filament proteins & potentially other cellular factors to daughter cells during progenitor cell division (putative)
• interacts with FHOD3 (putative)

• immature skeletal muscle cells
• upon terminal neural differentiation, nestin is down-regulated & replaced by neurofilaments

  • primitive neuroectodermal tumors
  • rhabdomyosarcoma
  • medulloblastoma
  • astrocytoma
  • glioblastoma
  • ependymoma
  • ganglioglioma
  • meningioma
