Function
- neurofilaments may form from neurofilament L & either neurofilament M or neurofilament H
- neurofilaments within perikarya & proximal dendrites are normally minimally phorphorylated
- in contrast, neurofilaments in axons are normally heavily phosphorylated
Structure
- cytoskeletal filaments:
- microtubules: 25 nm
- intermediate filaments: 10-12 nm (includes neurofilaments)
- microfilaments: 7-10 nm
