Function
- proteoglycan core protein
- binds to type 1 collagen & type 2 collagen, fibronectin & TGF-beta
- may affect the rate of fibrils formation
- attached glycosaminoglycan chain can be either chondroitin sulfate or dermatan sulfate depending upon the tissue of origin
- forms a ternary complex with MFAP2 & ELN
- interacts with DPT (putative)
Structure
- belongs to the small leucine-rich proteoglycan (SLRP) family, class I subfamily
- contains 12 LRR repeats (leucine-rich repeats)
Compartment
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=5; A,B,C,D,E
Expression
TGF-beta stimulates decorin synthesis
Pathology
- defects in DCN are the cause of congenital stromal corneal dystrophy (CSCD)
