- binds to DNA as heterodimer with retinoic acid receptor, vitamin D3 receptor, thyroid hormone receptor & LX nuclear receptor
- cytoplasmic anchoring associated with hsp90
- ligands include 9-cis-retinoic acid & docosahexaenoic acid
