Function
- associates with the cytoplasmic domain of a variety of cadherins
- may play a role in cell differentiation
- binds MLLT4 & F-actin (putative)
- interacts directly with PSEN1 & CTNNB1 to form part of the PSEN1/cadherin/catenin adhesion complex
- interacts with ARHGAP21 & with JUB
- sumoylated
Structure
belongs to the vinculin/alpha-catenin family
Compartment
- cytoplasm, cytoskeleton
- cell junction, adherens junction
- cell membrane, cytoplasmic side
- found at cell-cell boundaries & probably at cell-matrix boundaries
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2
Expression
expressed ubiquitously in normal tissues
Pathology
- abnormalities of alpha-catenin are involved in the process of cancer invasion & metastasis
