Clinical manifestations
- impairment in the ability to plan & carry out sensory & motor tasks
- children appear out of sync with their environment
- poor balance & coordination
- clumsiness
- vision problems
- perception difficulties
- emotional & behavioral problems (immature behavior)
- difficulty with reading, writing, & speaking
- poor social skills
- poor posture
- poor short-term memory
- may be of average or above average intelligence
Management
- treatment is symptomatic & supportive
- occupational therapy
- speech therapy
- cueing or other forms of communication such as using pictures & hand gestures
- many children with the disorder require special education
- prognosis
- lifelong disorder
- many individuals learn to compensate for their disabilities
