sclerotherapy (phlebosclerosis)

Indications

• treatment of varicose veins
  • hemorrhoids
  • telangiectasias
  • rectal prolapse
• esophageal sclerotherapy
  • esophageal varices
• chemical pleurodesis

Procedure

• injection of an irritant solution (sclerosing_agent)
• this induces thrombophlebitis which predisposes the varicosity to obliteration by thrombosis
• subsequent fibrosis/scarring completes the remodeling process
• sclerosing agents:
  • sodium tetradecyl sulfate
