eosinophilic gastroenteritis

Pathology

• small bowel biopsy shows
  • eosinophilic infiltration of the mucosa
  • occasionally, absence of villi

Clinical manifestations

• history of allergies
  • asthma
  • allergic rhinitis
  • food intolerances
• episodic gastrointestinal symptoms
  • nausea/vomiting
  • abdominal pain
  • diarrhea
  • steatorrhea

Laboratory

• complete blood count
  • eosinophilia
  • anemia
• iron-deficiency
• decreased serum proteins: serum albumin decreased & serum globulins decreased
• stool studies
  • fecal fat
  • ova & parasites to rule out parasitic infection

Diagnostic procedures

• endoscopy with small bowel biopsy

Radiology

• small bowel studies show course folds & filling defects

Management

rapid response to oral steroids
