diabetes mellitus 1.5 (latent autoimmune diabetes)

Epidemiology

• adults
• up to 20% of patients labeled type-2 diabetes

Pathology

• autoimmune disorder like type-1 diabetes
• generally no insulin resistance

Clinical manifestations

• patients generally do not have other conditions associated with type-2 diabetes (hypertension ...)

Laboratory

• serum triglycerides generally normal
• HDL cholesterol general not low

Management

• may be initial response to oral hypoglycemics
• 50% need insulin with 4 years
