Introduction
Covalent modification of a protein with ubiquitin, or a ubiquitin-like protein. Ubiquitin & ubiquitin-like proteins modify an epsilon amino group of lysine in the target protein via its C-terminal carboxyl-group. They are expressed as inactive precursors with extensions at their C-terminus preventing direct conjugation. The precursors are processed by specific proteases.
