Swedish Trial in Old Patients (STOP)

Introduction

Patients:

• 6614 patients, age 70-84 years
• systolic BP > 180 mm Hg &/or diastolic BP > 105 mm Hg
• random assignment of 3 groups
  • beta-blocker or diuretic
  • ACE inhibitor (enalapril or lisinopril)
  • Ca+2 channel blocker (felodipine or isradipine)

Results:

• blood pressure declines in the treatment groups from a mean of 194/98 to 159/81 mm Hg
• after 4.5 years, the combined endpoint of stroke or myocardial infarction were the same in all 3 groups
