Indications

• resection of a distal segment of the colon (colectomy) due to
  • colorectal carcinoma
  • ulcerative colitis
  • familial polyposis coli
  • diverticulitis
  • bowel infarction
  • abdominal trauma

Procedure

• surgical procedure rerouting the termination of the gastrointestinal tract via connecting the colon to the abdominal skin

Complications

• pyoderma gangrenosum at colostomy site in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease)
