ileostomy (Kock Pouch)

Indications

• disorders of the colon precluding passage of feces
  • colectomy for
    • colorectal carcinoma
    • ulcerative colitis
    • familial polyposis coli
    • diverticulitis
    • bowel infarction
    • abdominal trauma

Procedure

• establishment of a direct connection of the lumen of the ileum with the outside of the body
• a continent ileostomy may be an alternative to using an outside collecting bag
• in continent ileostomy, an internal reservoir pouch is created from part of the small intestine (Kock Pouch)
• a valve is constructed & a stoma is placed through the abdominal wall
• a tube is inserted through the stoma & valve to drain the pouch
