Introduction
Design:
- double blind trial
- 7000 surgical or medical intensive care unit patients
- 64% with mechanical ventilation
- 44% with organ failure (1 or more organs)
Fluid resuscitation with normal saline or 4% albumin
Results:
- all cause mortality same in both groups at 21 days
- a trend toward improved outcome with 4% albumin observed in septic patients
- a trend toward improved outcome with normal saline observed in head trauma patients
