Introduction
Study characteristics:
- 840 adults with chronic renal disease
- 95% without diabetes mellitus
- serum creatinine > 1.4 mg/dL (men) 1.2 mg/dL women
Treatment:
- patients randomized to target blood pressures of < 125/75 mm Hg vs < 140/90 mm Hg (control)
- target blood pressure slightly higher for elderly (> 60)
- to achieve goals. physicians encouraged to use:
Median follow-up of 5.9 years
Results:
- lower target blood pressure group less likely to experience
- renal failure (62% vs 70%)
- combined endpoint of death or renal failure (72% vs 76%)
- no effect of target blood pressure on proteinuria
Notes
- renal function (GFR) estimated by MDRD study equation
