Etiology

• Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common cause

Management

• if facility has low rate of resistant organisms, no need to cover MRSA
• broad spectrum coverage for gram-negative bacteria indicated for COPD
• levofloxacin rather than ceftriaxone or cefipime if patient to be treated in nursing home* *

* it is unclear whether or not this applies only to patients with COPD
