Adverse effects

• rarely severe or life-threatening
• result in seizures, acidosis, hepatic necrosis, heart block, tachycardia, hypotension, hypoglycemia or hypertension
• plant toxins include
  • calcium oxalate
  • plants with hypoglycemic potential: Panex ginseng & others (see)
  • plants causing electrolyte disturbances & other pathology (digitalis glycosides)
  • mushroom poisoning
  • many others

Laboratory

• blood glucose if altered mental status

Management

• digoxin antibody Fab framents for suspected cardiac glycoside toxicity
