Introduction

Indciations:

Mechanism of action

stroke rehabilitation

  • brain-computer interface robotics
  • device consists of an electroencephalography electrode headset that obtains scalp-recorded potentials to identify when a patient intends to move their affected hand, together with a robotic hand brace senses these signals & opens & closes the hand in response

quadriplegia

  • BrainGate2 clinical trial,
    • two intracortical brain-computer interface (BCI) chips the size of a baby aspirin place into part of motor cortex that governs hand movement
    • as patient imagined writing, a machine-learning algorithm used signals from individual neurons to recognize patterns produced with each letter
    • this allowed patient to communicate in real time with text at a rate of 90 characters per minute[3]

anarthria & spastic quadriparesis caused by a brainstem stroke[4]

  • words & sentences decoded directly from cortical activity during attempted speech with use of deep-learning models & a natural-language model
