Introduction

Severe form of dysarthria resulting in inability to speak.

Etiology

• brainstem stroke

Differential diagnosis

• aphasia is a language disorder
• anarthria is a motor disorder (does not affect ability to understand language)

Notes

• words & sentences decoded directly from cortical activity during attempted speech with use of deep-learning models & a natural-language model* in a patient with anarthria & spastic quadriparesis caused by a brainstem stroke
