flurbiprofen (Ocufen)

Introduction

Ophthalmic agent: (Ocufen)

Indications

• inhibition of intra-operative miosis
• treatment of post-operative inflammation following cataracts surgery
• treatment of cystoid macular edema

Dosage

• 1 drop every 30 minutes, beginning 2 hours before surgery (4 drops to each eye)

Ophthalmic: 0.03% (5 mL). (Ocufen)

Adverse effects

• common (> 10%)
  • slowing of corneal healing, irritation, itching, burning
• less common (1-10%)
  • redness of eyes (hyperemia)
• other
  • blurred vision
  • toxic amblyopia
  • systemic effects of ocular absorption may occur

• drug adverse effects of NSAIDs
