Etiology

• trauma

Clinical manifestations

• severe knee pain

Radiology

• anteroposterior radiographs of the knee

Complications

• damage to the popliteal artery, which can result in ischemia
• disruption of the anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament & medial collateral ligaments
• peroneal nerve injury

Differential diagnosis

• patella dislocation
  • patients often able to correct dislocation themselves

Management

• reduction of knee dislocation with conscious sedation (ketamine)
• external fixation of the knee
• repair of the knee ligaments*
