• continuation of femoral artery as it passes through adductor hiatus to enter the popliteal space

Course

passes deep to the arcus tendineus of the soleus

Branches

• lateral superior genicular artery
• medial superior genicular artery
• middle genicular artery
• lateral inferior genicular artery
• medial inferior genicular artery
• sural artery
• anterior tibial artery (terminal* branch)
• posterior tibial artery (terminal* branch)

* bifurcates at lower border of the popliteus muscle
