Introduction
Indications
- birth control
- 84-90% effective
- less effective in women who have given birth Contradindications:
- does NOT prevent sexually transmitted disease
- use with caution if sensitive to polyurethane or sulfa
- should not be worn for more than 30 consecutive hours.
Pharmacokinetics
- effective immediately afetr insertion & for 24 hours
- must remain in place for at least six hours after intercourse
Adverse effects
- sensitivity to nonoxynol-9 may cause localized burning, itching, redness, or irritation (these symptoms typically subside within a few days to a week)
Mechanism of action
- soft, disposable, polyurethane foam containing the spermicide nonoxynol-9
