Introduction
A group of surface-acting agents used in spermicidal preparations such as contraceptive foams & diaphragm jellies.
Vaginal agent available as foam, cream, or suppositories.
Provides some protection against Chlamydia & gonorrhea.
Does NOT provide adequate protection against HIV[2][5] or other STDs[5]
Adverse effects
- frequent use may cause genital or rectal lesions which may facilitate HIV transmission[2]
Mechanism of action
- surface active agent: disrupts sperm cell membrane[3]
