risk stratification of syncope in the emergency department (ROSE index)

History

• age > 65 years
• history of heart failure, ischemic heart disease or ventricular arrhythmias
• lack of warning sign/symptoms

Clinical manifestations

• bradycardia < 50 beats/min
• chest pain

Laboratory

• B-type natriuretic peptide in serum > 300 mg/mL
• fecal occult blood positive
• anemia, blood hemoglobin < 9 g/dL

Diagnostic procedures

• abnormal electrocardiogram
  • Q waves (other than lead III)
• SaO2 < 94% on room air

Management

• inpatient evaluation indicated in patients with significant risk factors
