Indications
- children > 2 years of age, adolescents & adults
- pregnant women, at end of 2nd trimester or in 3rd trimester[4]
Dosage
- 5 doses of the vaccine by age 4-6 years & a booster between 11-12 years are currently recommended
Complications
Notes
- children fully vaccinated against pertussis are still at risk, which increases with time since immunization[10]
- 92% effective[1] (seems in conflict with ref[8])
- effectiveness may diminish within 3 years[5]
- fully vaccinated children 5-fold more susceptible to pertussis 3 years after vaccination[11]
- among fully vaccinated children (total of 4 doses), vaccine efficacy decreases from 98.1% within the first year of the final dose to 71.2% after 60 months[7]
- among children with persistent cough, evidence of recent pertussis found in 18% of fully vaccinated children (vs 20% of children overall)[8]
- the original pertussis vaccine, derived from the cellular components of Bordetella pertussis in the 1940s, was highly effective but caused adverse side effects (fever, febrile seizures)[11]
- outbreaks still seen despite 6 vaccinations & mandagory vaccination policies
